The Credit Card Surcharge solution launched in Canada in late 2024. It allows merchants to collect a surcharge when they charge credit card-paying customers—essentially lowering their costs of card acceptance.

How QR-Code Payments Work:
- Generating the QR Code:
- The merchant generates a unique QR code that encodes payment information such as the payment amount, merchant ID, and other transaction details.
- Customer Scans the QR Code:
- The customer uses their smartphone to scan the QR code. This is usually done through a mobile payment app like Apple Pay, Google Pay, or a bank-specific app.
- Payment Details:
- Once scanned, the payment app automatically reads the details from the QR code and displays the payment information (amount, merchant name) to the customer.
- Customer Confirms Payment:
- The customer confirms the transaction by entering a PIN, fingerprint, or facial recognition, depending on the app’s security settings.
- Transaction Completion:
- The payment is processed, and both the merchant and customer receive confirmation. The funds are then transferred from the customer’s account to the merchant’s account.
- Convenience:
- QR code payments are easy to use and do not require physical cards or cash. Customers only need their smartphone to make a payment.
- Speed:
- Transactions are quick, reducing checkout times and improving customer experience, especially in high-traffic environments.
- Cost-Effective:
- For merchants, QR code payments can be more cost-effective than traditional payment terminals, as they require minimal hardware.
- Security:
- QR code payments are secure as they use encryption and tokenization. Additionally, they reduce the risk of card theft or fraud.
- Contactless:
- Especially important in a post-pandemic world, QR code payments allow for a fully contactless transaction, minimizing physical contact.
